Lorem Ipsum is a scrambled passage of Latin text derived from a work by Cicero, 'De finibus bonorum et malorum' (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 BCE. The name 'Lorem Ipsum' itself comes from the first two words of the scrambled passage — a fragment of 'dolorem ipsum' (pain itself) that no longer means anything in its truncated form.

The purpose of placeholder text is to fill space that will eventually contain real content, while keeping the design review focused on form rather than substance. When a mock-up contains real copy, stakeholders inevitably discuss the wording — should this say 'buy now' or 'get started'? — and the conversation drifts away from layout, spacing, and hierarchy. Lorem Ipsum removes that distraction by being visibly meaningless: nobody reads it, so everybody can focus on how the page looks rather than what it says.

Lorem Ipsum specifically mimics the visual characteristics of real text — word length distribution, sentence rhythm, paragraph density — without conveying meaning. Before launch, every instance of Lorem Ipsum should be replaced with real copy or, at minimum, with realistic placeholder text that reflects the length and structure of the final content. Some teams use 'content briefs' — annotations describing what will go in each space — as an intermediate step between Lorem Ipsum and final copy.

Several alternatives have emerged for teams that want placeholder text with more relevance. 'Hipster Ipsum' uses startup jargon, 'Cupcake Ipsum' uses dessert vocabulary, 'Bacon Ipsum' uses meat terms — all with the same visual distribution as Lorem Ipsum but with a tone that can make mock-ups more engaging for certain audiences. These are useful for internal presentations where the humor or theme helps stakeholders engage, though they carry the same risk as Lorem Ipsum of distracting from layout if overused.

A more substantive alternative is to use real content from a previous version of the page, or from a similar page on the same site. This gives you accurate length, tone, and structure — the actual content properties that affect design decisions — rather than a Latin approximation. The trade-off is that real content invites content-focused feedback when you're trying to focus on design, which is the exact problem Lorem Ipsum solves. The best approach is often both: Lorem Ipsum for early structural work, real or realistic content for final design review.

Lorem Ipsum generators are embedded in most design tools precisely because the need is so universal. Figma, Sketch, and Adobe XD all include placeholder text features, and many website builders and CMS platforms generate it automatically when you create a new page. The integration matters because it removes friction — if you have to leave your design tool to find placeholder text, you're less likely to use it, and you're more likely to leave real copy in the mock-up where it doesn't belong.

For web development specifically, lorem ipsum generators serve a second purpose: populating test data.
